PARK SLOPE — Work to add speed bumps and other traffic safety improvements was scheduled to begin Monday along dangerous Fourth Avenue, according to DOT signs posted in the area.

The six-lane thoroughfare was recently the subject of a series of heated community board meetings in which residents fought for — and against — various changes, which include restricting the number of left turns allowed, eliminating some traffic lanes, and expanding medians to protect pedestrians crossing the street.

The safety upgrades will be made between Atlantic Avenue to 15th Street, where 53 people were either injured or killed between 2007 and 2011, according to the DOT.
