CHELSEA — A barbecue competition featuring some of the top grill chefs from across the country will smoke up the Big Apple next month.

The Starchefs.com International Chefs Congress, an annual three-day gastronomic extravaganza, is kicking off its first-ever Smoke@ICC competition on Pier 57 Sept. 28, the online culinary magazine announced Wednesday. The contest will pit award-winning chefs from Vermont's Belted Cow Bistro against those from The New Carillon in Austin, Texas, Le Petite Grocery in New Orleans and many more.

“Not only is barbecue one of the most exciting and rapidly growing segments of the restaurant industry, but chefs across the country are embracing smoking and barbecue techniques like never before, elevating the flavors, taste and even plating," StarChefs.com Editor-in-Chief Antoinette Bruno said in a statement.

The 10 teams will compete in categories including “New World,” “Regional American” and “Asian" — along with a "People's Choice" award that will give onlookers a chance to sample the barbecue and cast the deciding votes.

The winning team will receive a "grand championship" trophy, an all-expenses-paid trip to Korea, an MLR-150 competition-level smoker and the opportunity to compete at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas.

Judges include Kenny Callaghan of Blue Smoke and Andy Husbands of Boston's Tremont 647.

In addition to munching on a variety of briskets, ticketholders at Smoke@ICC will also be able to enjoy a beer garden, live music and a whole animal butchering demonstration.

Tickets cost $65 and include samples from the 10 barbecue teams, as well as two beers, and entry at 5 p.m. For entry at 4 p.m. and special perks including unlimited beverages and a special demonstration of backyard grilling techniques led by the judges, there is an $85 VIP ticket option. Reserve your tickets here.
