NEW YORK CITY — A father of two was killed after being shot several times just steps from his Jamaica home Wednesday morning, cops said.

Marcus Wharwood, 28, was shot once in the head and several more times in his torso near Remington Street and Shore Avenue about 5:15 a.m., FDNY and NYPD officials said. Wharwood, who has a 7-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, was on his way to work, his family said.

"He was a great brother and an even better father," said his grieving sister, Michelle Wharwood, 32. "He was always helping somebody. He was all about family. He would do anything."

Michelle added that she was the first one to get to her brother after he was shot.

"I was there with him laying in the street," she said. "I didn't see anything, I just went to him."

Wharwood was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he died about 7:45 a.m., police said.

He moved with his family from Trinidad in 1994 and was working as a retail vendor, relatives said.

Wharwood hadn't talked about having trouble with anyone or about feeling threatened recently, his family added.

"He was a like a brother to me, too," said his friend, Shaunia Bernadine, 26. "He was always there for people — even my two sons. He was a disciplinarian when it comes to kids."

Wharwood lived in the house with his mother, sister and two nephews. His children live with their mother in a different part of Queens, family said.

Police are still looking for the shooter.
