COLUMBIA WATERFRONT DISTRICT — A neighborhood ballet school is opening a second studio in Carroll Gardens, after years of working out of rented church spaces and a single Columbia Street studio.

Cobble Hill Ballet, located at 193 Columbia St., will soon expand their classes to Carroll and Court streets, where their new spacious dance studio can be found, said Colette Linton-Meyer, owner of the school, which she started 10 years ago.

Classes will begin Sept. 7 at the Court Street space.

From pre-ballet to pointe work, Cobble Hill Ballet currently teaches about 600 students aged 3 to adult, said Linton-Meyer, who was trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in England.

While ballet can be physically demanding, it challenges students to concentrate and think creatively – while staying on their toes, so to speak.

“This is really good for kids that need to focus,” she said.

The school started an “intensive program,” last year, for students who are looking to craft their dancing skills at an advanced level, she said.

When Linton-Meyer moved to New York almost two decades ago, she couldn’t find classes geared solely toward learning ballet in the borough, she said.

Some students from the school have gone on to practice ballet professionally – even entering the School of American Ballet – but most would-be ballerinas join the school just “for the love of it,” she said.
