FORT GREENE — The Fort Greene Flea has some new vendors to watch this summer.
Sesame spreads, specialty canoes and international children's clothing are among the latest additions to the weekly 150-vendor market in the 40,000-square-foot schoolyard at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School.
For boating enthusiasts, the Housatonic Canoe Shop is now selling custom-made wooden canoes at Fort Greene Flea. Storeowner John Visser is based in Connecticut and crafts each boat with cedar strips formed around a rigid building mold, covered with fiberglass cloth and bonded with resin, making the canoes "incredibly rugged yet lightweight."
Visser said wooden canoes and kayaks have become hard to find.
"I boat regularly and prefer them to the plastic and metals boats that are more common now," he said.
Visser is hoping his canoes will appeal to New Yorkers interested in taking their own boats to the rivers and lakes of upstate New York. Canoe prices range from $800 to $3,500.
Another new vendor is Brooklyn Sesame, which makes halva spreads from scratch with "fresh honey and ground sesame seeds mixed with pistachios, toasted coconut, roasted sesame seeds, hazelnuts or cocoa and sea salt," the shop said.
Created by a team of "artisan foodie Brooklynites with Mediterranean roots," the spreads are designed to be eaten with cheese, fruit or fresh bread. Spreads cost $7 to $12.
Also joining the market is Fleurs-De-Kalb, which offers potpourri-style creations made by a Brooklyn-based collective of floral designers. They sell "decorative wood elements, dried and freshly cut flowers, wrapped bouquets, and live plants potted in a variety of vessels," according to the Brooklyn Flea website.
And for fashion-forward kids, Superfussy is a children's clothing line inspired by global fashion. Husband-and-wife team Khairi and Nathalie traveled to Myanmar, Borneo, Costa Rica, Tulum, Bali and Thailand to get inspiration for their collections. Their daughter Milla serves as a muse for the unique designs, including chikan kurtas, harem pants, sarong scarves and more. Prices range from $12 to $45.
The Fort Greene Flea takes place Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 23 at 176 Lafayette Ave. in Fort Greene.
