GREENPOINT — As she sunbathed in her bikini on the ledge of McCarren Park's playground, Dixie Rose Fernandez presided over a flock of young children flitting through water sprays spouting from mouths of stone turtles.
"I bring the kids here every day in the summer," said Fernandez, director of the day camp and afterschool program Elektrik Youth. "They take the water and pour it on the slides."
Fernandez's students may frequent just one spot in the soaring temperatures, but kids around North Brooklyn can swim, splash and scurry through the free aquatic features in city parks.
McCarren Park, Lorimer Street and Driggs Avenue
The Abate Playground at McCarren Park becomes a fountain-filled haven in the summer, when a handful of animal sculptures on the ground spew water in a square where kids can freely run from one to the next.
And just next to the playground the renowned 37,950-square-foot McCarren Pool includes a baby area, fountains and shallow sections for kids or adults to swim laps.
Transmitter Park, Greenpoint Avenue and West Street
At this year-old waterfront park kids can hit a button to spark the spray from a boat-themed set of sprinklers.
American Playground, Franklin Street and Noble Street
A few tall poles — including one with Canadian geese atop — spew water in this popular Greenpoint summer spot.
Maria Hernandez Park, Starr Street and Knickerbocker Avenue
Kids can dart under and around a rainbow of red, yellow and blue arching bars misting their surroundings in the park's playground.
McGolrick Park, Russell Street and Nassau Avenue
This tree-abundant green space in Greenpoint known for offering shady respite also features a few strong water sprays on the edge of the playground.
