Man Plunges Down Open Shaft on Staten Island, Officials Say

ST. GEORGE — Emergency crews freed a man who had tumbled down an open shaft on the construction site of a future courthouse in St. George Thursday morning, an FDNY spokesman said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, fell into the shaft at 26 Central Ave. about 10 a.m., the spokesman said. It was not immediately clear where the open shaft was located.

The man was treated for minor injuries at Richmond University Hospital, fire said.
