STUY TOWN — Residents of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village may briefly lose power over the next couple of days as Con Edison repairs equipment, officials said.

Con Ed recently notified tenants that temporary power outages may affect the eastern part of the complex and urged tenants to conserve electricity, said Chris Olert, spokesman for Con Ed.

“We’re working on electrical equipment on Avenue C,” Olert said. “There’s potential for a brief period of time of temporary outages and flickering. We gave notice to residents, just to be on the safe side.”

Con Ed recently installed a new transformer on Avenue C near East 17th Street, and to hook it up, work is being done to aboveground cables housed in boxes along the avenue between 14th and 18th Streets, Olert said.

Con Ed asked residents to help avoid outages by turning off nonessential electronics such as TVs, computers, air conditioners, washers, dryers and microwaves.

Refrigerators may be kept on, but doors should be closed to save energy, the notice said.

Work should be completed in the next couple of days, but Con Ed does not have a set timetable, Olert said Tuesday morning.

Those who have any problems with electric service are asked to contact Con Ed by calling 1-800-752-6633 or visiting the utility's website.
