NEW YORK CITY — An NYPD police dog still made his collar even after being injured in a melee between four women on a Midtown subway platform on Tuesday morning, cops said.
Bear, 6, a five-year veteran of the police Transit Bureau's K-9 Unit, sprang into action with his handler, Officer Vincent Tieniber, 36, about 11: 15 a.m. to help another officer subdue four women slugging it out on the 59th Street stop of the 4 train subway platform, police said.
The fighting was so heated that one woman was choking another, according to cops.
Tieniber was trying to handcuff one of the women, Ravenia Matos-Davis, 22, of Queens, when she fought back, injuring the officer, cops said. The suspect allegedly kicked Bear twice in the mouth, cracking four of his teeth, cutting his tongue and scuffing the German Shepherd's snout, said Paul J. Browne, department spokesman.
"Bear kept the woman's foot in his mouth, and held on until I could handcuff her," Tieniber said in a statement.
The police pooch was taken to the Animal Medical Center on East 62nd Street, where he was treated and released. He will be back in the hospital on Wednesday to have two teeth capped and two chipped teeth shaved down, cops said.
Tieniber, an 11-year veteran of the NYPD, was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was treated for a sprained wrist and released, Browne said.
Matos-Davis was charged with injuring a police animal, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing government administration.
Alexandria James, 19, of the Bronx, was charged with strangulation and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Tabricia Moore, 31, also of the Bronx, was charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and obstructing government administration.
