Man Arrested in Attack on Babysitter After 5-Year-Old Reports Sex Abuse
HARLEM — A man violently attacked his girlfriend's babysitter in Harlem after the woman's little girl reported she was sexually assaulted while in the sitter's care, the NYPD said Monday.
The male sitter, with whom the girl had stayed overnight Saturday at a Harlem apartment, was in serious condition at a local hospital, NY1 reported.
The woman's boyfriend was being arrested Monday for assault as police investigated the sexual abuse allegations, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said at a press conference.
The 5-year-old apparently told her mother about the molestation during a bath the following day, Kelly said.
"The mother entrusts the 5-year-old to a male friend. The 5-year-old comes back in the morning, and the mother was bathing [the child] and she apparently makes statements as to being abused by this individual," Kelly said.
"The boyfriend hears about this and confronts the individual and assaults him," he explained.
NY1 reported that the sitter lives in an apartment building owned by the Fortune Society, which finds housing for former innmates, and that the group said it was cooperating with authorities.
No charges have yet been filed against the babysitter, police said.
