KINGSBRIDGE — New retail and hundreds of jobs are destined for the north Bronx with the arrival of a large Burlington Coat Factory this fall and a multilevel shopping center next year, officials announced Monday.

Burlington Coat Factory, the discount clothing store, will move into the 70,000-square-foot building on Webster Avenue by Fordham Road that is currently home to Cookie’s Kids Department Store. (Cookie's announced earlier this year that it planned to close that location in June.)

In Kingsbridge, construction officially began Monday on Broadway Plaza, a 133,000-square-foot indoor mall at the former site of a parking lot on 230th Street next to the Major Deegan Expressway. It is expected to open in the fall of 2014.

Burlington Coat Factory is expected to create 100 new jobs, while the shopping center should generate 250 or more full and part-time positions, officials said.

Broadway Plaza “will serve as a major new hub of activity for the entire Kingsbridge community, bringing new traffic — and new customers — to this important commercial district,” Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a statement.

The mall developer, Equity One, bought the parking lot site just south of the No. 1 train’s 231st St. Station stop from the city for $7.5 million last year.

It plans to spend about $54 million to build the mall, which will feature two elevated levels of stores above 130 ground-level parking spaces. A pedestrian walkway will lead into the center from Broadway.

Equity One is negotiating with “several prominent national retailers” about leasing space in the mall, according to a press release.

While the developer declined to name companies it is in talks with, its website and a leasing brochure both listed the discount supermarket ALDI, T.J. Maxx and Sports Authority as future tenants. (A chart showing how many square feet each of the three stores had reserved appeared to have been removed from the website Tuesday.)

An Equity One representative said the firm was prohibited from disclosing possible tenants during negotiations, but added, “We’re definitely looking for a food market, a sports tenant and retail.”

The new Burlington Coat Factory will mark the New Jersey-based chain’s eighth location in New York City and its second in The Bronx.

“We are thrilled to open a new Burlington in The Bronx, bringing jobs to the neighborhood and providing residents with a valued shopping experience,” company president and CEO Thomas Kingsbury said in a statement.
