New Concept Pharmacy Headed to LES with a Mix of Old and New

Openings

Before May 15 the Lower East Side did not have a bar for booze-loving "audiophiles" who wanted to snack of classic New York cuisine. Now it does courtesy of Hill and Dale, a new bar and lounge at 115 Allen St. that is decked out with radio and audio antiques including a century-old record player.

Moscot Eyeglasses, a family-owned store now in its fifth generation, has jumped to the south side of Delancey Street after 77 years in its former location. The company's staff have gone to lengths, transporting the historic charm of the old store to its new shop at 108 Orchard St., which opened on May 22.

The original location of gourmet mac and cheese mecca S'MAC at 245 East 12th St. reopened May 6 after being closed by the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for several days. The original inspection by the department found evidence of mice and other violations such as improper food utensils temporarily shutting the store down.

A new-concept pharmacy on the Lower East Side is set to open in June promising to bridge a gap between the neighborhood's old and new residents, according to a New York Times article. Along with filling out prescriptions, Stanley's Pharmacy will be serving up natural remedies for ailments such as as hangovers inside its California-themed location at Hester and Ludlow streets.

Restaurant Preserve 24 opened at 177 East Houston with San Francisco-based artist Brian Goggin and former Fig & Olive chef John Parlatore at the helm, according to Eater.com. It's unusual décor of an entire white dingy under the bar and the shell of a grand piano strung up behind to store liquor comes with menu items ranging from a gourmet burger to scallops to truffled fires.

Closings

Legendary Lower East Side bar Max Fish is planning to swim across the East River to Williamsburg with a close date set for the end of July, the Lo Down reported. The bar has been serving the neighborhood for more than 20 years on Ludlow and E. Houston streets.

The 9th St. Bakery, a neighborhood fixture for 87 years between First and Second avenues, will be moving on in June after its landlord ended the lease, according to website EV Grieve.  The blog also reported the bakery's owners are looking into starting a delivery-only service for their baked good after the shop is replaced by a smoothie and juice bar.
