MANHATTAN CRIMINAL COURT — The suspect charged with gunning down a gay man in a vicious hate crime has been indicted by a grand jury, prosecutors said Thursday during a hearing in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Elliot Morales, accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Mark Carson in Greenwich Village on May 18 after hurling a barrage of anti-gay slurs, did not appear for the brief hearing Thursday.

The charges in his indictment will be made publicly available after his next scheduled court appearance, slated for June 18.

Morales was arraigned Sunday on a charge of murder as hate crime, as well as criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

Several of Carson’s visibly distraught friends and family were in attendance for the court hearing Thursday. They declined to comment.

Morales’s lawyer, Kevin Canfield, said his client, who is being held without bail, was “doing fine.”

“As well as can be expected under the circumstances,’ he added.
