INWOOD — An elderly woman had to be rushed to the hospital after a fire broke out at a Dyckman Street apartment building Saturday night.

Fire officials said that the fire broke out at approximately 6:26 p.m. in a third-floor apartment at 152 Dyckman St, right next door to a fruit store that caught fire last week.

Battalion Chief Montera said that the blaze started in the kitchen of the apartment and spread to the hallway, where firefighters were able to contain it.

"One corner of the apartment was burned," Montera said. "The rest was smoke."

Firefighters from Ladder 36 found a woman in the bedroom of the apartment, officials said.

The woman was not breathing and was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition, officials said.

The fire was brought under control just after 7:30 p.m. by 60 firefighters, officials said.

Outside the building, anxious residents recounted their experiences and waited to hear when they would be able to return to their homes.

The fire is the third on Dyckman Street in the past three weekends.

Two weeks ago a blaze broke out in the plastic factory Just Plastics at 250 Dyckman St. Another burned out a grocery store at 154 Dyckman St.
