NEW YORK — Cops arrested a man Wednesday who they said tried to rape a 13-year-old girl in a Coney Island apartment building last week.
Police said Bennett Castello, 40, encountered the girl in an elevator at 3:30 p.m. on April 29. He took her to the basement, where he brandished a pair of scissors and tried to rape her, police said. He then fled.
Castello, a Flatbush resident, was charged with attempted rape, burglary, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.
The suspect also faces charges of forcible touching, attempted sex abuse with an individual less than 14 and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17.
