QUEENS — Thursdays are the new Fridays in Sunnyside this month.
Dozens of the neighborhood's bars, restaurants and other businesses are offering deals and specials every Thursday during May, in an effort to get more residents out shopping, eating and drinking the day before weekends.
The "Hoppin' Thursdays" promotion is being launched this Thursday by the neighborhood's business improvement group, Sunnyside Shines, and Sunnyside's Boulevard Bars, a coalition of local bar and restaurant owners.
“I think this is a great opportunity for people in the area to discover the bars and restaurants they haven’t been to before, as well as check out some of the new businesses," said Pat Burke, owner of the Courtyard Alehouse at 40-18 Queens Blvd., which will be offering a "buy one, get one free deal" on its 24 craft draft beers on Thursdays.
In all, 33 local businesses are participating in the promotion, including the Pink Icing Bake Shop at 44-13 Queens Blvd., where customers who spend $5 or more on Thursdays between 3 and 5 p.m. can get a free coffee or a cupcake.
"When the weather gets warmer, people come in craving our pies, especially the key lime and lemon meringue,” said owner Raul Jimenez.
Other Hoppin' Thursday deals include a three-course dinner at Bliss Street Station for $19.95, a free glass of wine with dinner at Romanian eatery Bucharest Restaurant, a free half-pound bag of special blend whole bean coffee for shoppers who spend $30 or more at Parrot Coffee and Grocery and a free manicure with any hair treatment at Blanky's Salon.
All participating businesses will be handing out Hoppin’ Thursdays cards, and customers who buy five or more of the specials this month can turn their cards in to be entered in a raffle, with a chance to score a flat screen TV, iPad mini or a Kindle Fire.
