Citi Bike Share Stations Defaced in Fort Greene

By Janet Upadhye | April 23, 2013 12:42pm

FORT GREENE — Citi Bike Share is causing a stir in Fort Greene.

Newly installed stations were recently defaced with signs that read "Citibank, residential landmark blocks are not for advertising or commercial activity," Brownstoner first reported.

But the Landmarks Preservation Commission gave the city the go ahead to install the stations.

"LPC approved the plan for the installation of bike share stations in historic districts throughout the city because they have no effect on the historic fabric of those neighborhoods," said spokeswoman Elisabeth de Bourbon.

Historic fabric is defined as sidewalk paving, cobblestone pavement in the street bed or buildings.

De Bourbon added, "In general, the landmarks law allows advertising in historic districts that appears on other types of street fixtures like bus shelters, pay toilets and newsstands that are in those areas."

Still, some locals have complained to Councilmember Letitia James, asking her to to remove Citi Bike docking stations, according to bike advocacy group Transportation Alternatives.

James plans to address concerns at a town hall meeting Wednesday night.

"I have been supportive of the program, although I recognize some residents have concerns," James tweeted. "I hope we all approach the conversation with respect for our neighbors. I look forward to seeing you there!"

Transportation Alternatives is calling on residents to attend the meeting and show their support for Citi Bike Share.

"The sad truth is that Citi Bike is under attack in your neighborhood," Transportation Alternatives wrote to Fort Greene residents. "Will you speak up?"

The town hall meeting will take place Wednesday, April 24 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Benjamin Banneker Academy at 71-77 Clinton Ave.
