Chocolate Cake Bake-Off Features Local Brooklyn Chocolate Purveyors

COBBLE HILL — Calling all chocoholics.

The Chocolate Room is hosting a bake-off of their famous flour-less chocolate cake, using single-origin chocolate from five local purveyors like Red Hook’s Cacao Prieto.

The Court Street chocolaterie will then present the five delectable choices in a blind tasting where participants can choose their favorite chocolate cake.

After the votes are in, the most popular chocolate will be featured at the store and used in their flour-less chocolate cake recipe for a month.

“The single-origins make for a really nice experience,” said Jon Payson, owner of the Chocolate Room, who said they wanted to try something different with their chocolate cake.

Payson hopes the friendly competition, held on April 27, will bring awareness to local Brooklyn chocolate makers and international cocoa farmers like Cacao Prieto, Fine & Raw, Raaka, Madagascan chocolate Madecasse and ki’Xocolatl made from Criollo cocoa and 100 percent Mexican ingredients.

The Red-Hook based Cacao Prieto produces bean-to-bar chocolate from organic Dominican cacao grown in their Dominican family farm in Santiago.

“There are a lot of chocolate lovers around here,” said Payson.

The Chocolate Room (269 Court St.) bake-off and tasting will be held on April 27 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at $20 per person. For reservations, call 718-246-2600.
