Manganaro's Hero Boy Briefly Shut by Health Department

HELL'S KITCHEN — An Italian sandwich mainstay was briefly shut down by the city's Health Department after racking up a whopping 60 violation points during an inspection Wednesday.

But Manganaro's Hero Boy, which has served meat-filled heroes on Ninth Avenue since 1956, cleaned up its act in time for lunch on Friday.

The department cited the sandwich shop for having evidence of mice and letting hot food cool down and letting cold food warm up past acceptable temperatures, according to online records.

On Friday, the restaurant had a "grade pending" sign in the window. Staff referred questions about the closure to the restaurant's owner, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It was cleared to reopen Thursday.

Famous for its 6-foot subs and Italian standards, Manganaro's Hero Boy at 492 Ninth Ave. scored a coup when its longtime next-door rival Manganaro's Grosseria closed last year.

The rival stores were both owned by members of the Dell'Orto family, who began to compete for customers decades ago and dispute who originally invented the 6-foot "Hero Boy" sandwiches.
