Pier 40 Field Lights Return After Long Post-Sandy Outage

By Andrea Swalec | March 28, 2013 3:55pm

MANHATTAN — Downtown sports facilities just scored their second home run this week.

Nighttime lights are back on at Pier 40's ball fields after they went dark when Hurricane Sandy hit, the Hudson River Park Trust announced Thursday afternoon.

The news that players young and old can now take to the fields at night came two days after the Battery Park City Authority said its Sandy-damaged fields will open in time for Little League season's opening day April 7.

“It’s such a relief to have power back at the beginning of our spring season — just in time for baseball," Trust president and CEO Madelyn Wils said in a statement.

Wils said the Trust's staff is working full speed ahead to help the park recover from the storm by the time warm weather hits.

Sandy caused severe damage to the 5-mile park that runs from Battery Park to West 59th Street, knocking out its entire electrical system. Power is expected to gradually be restored in the park starting in May, the Trust said.
