Smith-9th Streets Subway Station to Reopen in April

CARROLL GARDENS — It’s back.

After two years of construction, the Smith-9th Streets F/G subway station will finally reopen for use next month, an MTA official said.

The station, which has been closed since the summer of 2011, will be open for service on the week of April 22, said Andrew Inglesby, an MTA spokesman, at a recent CB6 Transportation Committee meeting.

“It’s the deep home stretch,” said the MTA official.

While the station was scheduled to open late last year, the date was pushed to April 2013, according to a report by the MTA’s Capital Program Oversight Committee.

Residual delays were caused by Hurricane Sandy, said Inglesby, but the report added that delays were partly caused by the contractor’s “poor management” of the renovation.

Additional problems included “insufficient manpower and quality control and other design issues,” according to the report.

The transit hub, which lies on the border of Carroll Gardens and Red Hook, is a vital stop for both the neighborhoods’ commuters.
