Upper East Side Warms to Frozen Yogurt

UPPER EAST SIDE — Two new frozen yogurt stops are set to open on Third Avenue.

One of the slated shops is called Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, which will be located next to neighborhood staple Coffee Bean and & Tea Leaf at 1467 Third Ave, at 83rd Street.

The other frozen yogurt buffet is called Swirl Whirl, and will be situated at 1374 Third Ave, at 78th Street.

Orange Leaf is a chain, whereas Swirl Whirl appears to have one other location in Westfield New Jersey, according to the company's website.

Orange leaf also has another Manhattan location on Second Avenue, between East 33rd and 34th Streets, according to a company spokeswoman.

There are at least a dozen yogurt buffets in the immediate area, according to Yelp.com.

And the stores' openings come on the heels of another yogurt buffet's demise.

Still, Orange Leaf — which expects to start slinging soft serve within the next few months — remains optimistic despite the competition on account of its uniqueness, spokeswoman Meredith Lynn said.

"This will be our second franchised location in Manhattan, and we already have plans for more to open this year," she said. "Our frozen yogurt is made with proprietary machines and recipes, which makes it richer-tasting and creamier than our competitors' products."

Swirl Whirl did not immediately return calls for comment.
