Second Chance Saloon's 'Metalheads' Dilute Their Edge at New 'Classic' Bar

WILLIAMSBURG — When his favorite punk rock dive Sweet Water became a mainstream bar a few years ago, Jason Kleinmann could no longer relish drinking — until he started his own joint to replace it.

And now that metalheads, bike messengers and rockers flood into his Second Chance Saloon, Kleinmann is the one going "classic," opening a second watering hole just down the street.

The Grand Grill and Bar, which he and his partner are opening in the next few weeks, will offer steaks, seafood, burgers, wine and beer to a more diverse crowd, said Kleinmann, noting that they "don't want any kind of pigeon hole" at the new spot.

"That's our clubhouse, and it's doing well enough to open another place," he said of Second Chance Saloon. "We opened the kind of bar we wanted to hang out in...and this will be the kind of place we want to eat...We'll have classic food done well."

Kleinmann and his partner have already devoted months to the design of their new grill, where they've installed a wooden bar built in 1870, 100-year-old paintings and an expansive mirror.

"We've been trying to do this a long time," he said, noting that they had torn out walls from 12 individual back rooms in the Grand Street building that previously housed a salon. "We'll have draft wine, and 13 lines of draft beer. First we'll have dinner and drinks, and then hopefully brunch."
