Dolphin Spotted in East River Near Astoria

By Julie Shapiro | March 15, 2013 8:59pm

QUEENS — A bottlenose dolphin turned heads is it bobbed along the East River just off the coast of Astoria Friday afternoon.

The dolphin was spotted about 2 p.m. on the east side of the river near the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, according to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

"The dolphin does not appear to be in distress and continues to be free swimming," the foundation said on its Facebook page.

It was not immediately clear if the dolphin was the same one that was spotted Wednesday in the East River swimming in large circles between East 96th and East 106th streets.

The Riverhead Foundation asks that the public report dolphin sightings to a hotline at 631-369-9829.
