Carrot Top Pastries Shut Down by Department of Health

By Nigel Chiwaya | March 14, 2013 3:47pm

INWOOD — Carrot Top Pastries, a popular Inwood bakery, was shut down down Thursday by the Department of Health.

Visitors to the popular Inwood bakery, which has been open at 5025 Broadway for 35 years, were greeted to a large yellow sticker from DOH declaring Carrot Top closed.

According to Carrot Top owner Renee Mancino, the bakery received several violations from the DOH, including violations for a leak from an apartment overhead, a small hole at the base of the front window, and milk that was above regulated temperature.

Mancino said that the store, which ships cakes to caterers and prisons, was previously under the jurisdiction of the state Department of Agriculture, but that she was notified in December that she would be have to be licensed by the Department of Health.

"This is devastating," Mancino said. "I've been in business 35 years. I never thought this would happen to me."

The shut down came as a surprise to Mancino, who said that in the past the Department of Agriculture would give her a week to correct any violations.

"The Department of Health is very strict," Mancino said, "and I didn't measure up."

Mancino said that she had hired exterminators and crews to fix the violations, and that she was going before the DOH Friday morning with the hope of getting the store reopened before the end of the week.
