Where to Shop For Your Oscar Party

By Victoria Floethe | February 22, 2013 6:57am

NEW YORK — The discovery of Oscar shaped candles in the Dual Specialty Store, an East Village Indian grocery, at $3.67 a piece was all I needed to convince me I should throw a party for the Academy Awards.

Soon after I stumbled upon Eleni's, in Chelsea Market, which makes cookies in shapes emblematic of the nominated best pictures ($75 for 20 cookies) — cowboy hats for "Djanjo Unchained," Canadian passports for "Argo," tiger heads for "Life of Pi" — as well as kitschy cookie portraits of the nominated actors and actresses.

With that, I fell down the Pinterest party rabbit hole.

Props for Instagram famous photo ops

First stop is New York Costumes on 4th Ave. With "Django Unchained" in mind, I wanted cowboy  hats and fake mustaches. I found a magnifiecent bicorn hat to represent "Les Miserables" as well.

Then I hopped over to St. Marks Place to buy $3 1970s shades to get that "Argo" look, though I was very tempted to buy the real thing at Fabulous Fannys on 9th Street. It's a lovely store specializing in vintage eye wear. If you go that direction it will cost you, but you'll want to wear them after the party.

The "Brave" bow and arrows set at Party City (223 W. 34th St., Manhattan and 625 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn) will liven things up. (The "Brave" cups are oddly appealing as well.)

For a "Life of Pi" tribute, and as my future pajamas, I ordered a onesie tiger suit. I found great ones on both Ebay and Etsy.

A magnifying glass pendant is very cool in photographs, and it has a 19th century feel which is good for "Lincoln" and "Anna Karenina". I've been wanting one since I saw Cara Delevigne's lip shot at New York Fashion Week. Catbird, a great online jewelry source, has one.

Fun and Games

All I need now is a menu and champagne from Acker Merral, New York's oldest wine store, which offers free delivery in Manhattan.

On the Academy Awards website they've posted downloadable Oscar ballots and Oscar Bingo—amusing enough to keep one checking in on the show, but not so challenging as to interrupt conversation about Angelina Jolie's dress.

And the winner is . . .

My lucky guest will receive a gold-dusted, dark chocolate Oscar from Sugar and Plumm, and I will have satisfied my yen for themed merry making. But the question still remains:

Would you pin this?
