Murray's Cheese Bar Starts Serving Brunch

By Andrea Swalec | February 20, 2013 9:13am

GREENWICH VILLAGE — Nothing says Sunday brunch like the cheesemonger's stinkiest selection.

Murray's Cheese Bar, the popular offshoot of the Bleecker Street cheese shop that opened in 1940, will begin serving weekend brunch at the restaurant after debuting in August.

"Cheese isn’t just for dinner, parties, picnics, snacking, breakfast or lunch anymore — it’s also for brunch," a spokeswoman for Murray's Cheese said in a statement this week.

The cheese-centric menu to be served Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. includes a sirloin burger topped with cheddar, gruyère, fontina, chèvre or brie, plus a fried egg and thick-cut bacon, served on an English muffin ($15).

Cheese lovers can also opt for two poached eggs served on an English muffin with ham and mushrooms, topped with a three-cheese fondue poured table side ($14).

The sweet menu options at the 264 Bleecker St. eatery include "The Elvis" French toast stuffed with bacon, peanut butter and caramelized bananas ($12).

A long list of cheeses will be available a la carte for $6 each, in categories that include fresh, soft-ripened, washed rind and blue.

Those looking for the cheesemonger's best can order the Week in Review, a plate featuring three of Murray's "absolute favorite cheeses of the week" for $14, according to the menu.

To wash all that cheese down, the eatery will serve orange, blood orange, pear and lychee mimosas ($9), as well as Stumptown coffee ($4).
