Harlem Shake Shimmies Uptown

By Nigel Chiwaya | February 18, 2013 12:54pm

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — The Harlem Shake has finally boogied its way uptown.

The viral hit — which has become an Internet sensation in less than a month — hit northern Manhattan in the form of two YouTube videos over the weekend.

The first video, uploaded Saturday, shows rap spoof artists Juan Bago & O in a wild recording studio dance party and even features a cameo by Scooby Doo. The second video, also posted Saturday, showcases Inwood's Everyday Christian Church youth group.

While the traditional Harlem Shake is a dance that dates back to the 1980s, the contemporary shake is a song by Baauer. A video to the song, which features people in costumes dancing uncontrollably, has exploded in popularity, picking up over 10 million views since Feb. 2.

Last week, YouTube wrote a blog post estimating that 4,000 parodies of the video were being uploaded to the site every day.
