EAST ELMHURST — A 22-year-old NFL player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneeers was arrested Monday morning after showing up at LaGuardia Airport with a loaded handgun, officials said.

Dennis Da'Quan Bowers, who goes by his middle name, was at the airport's Terminal C ticket counter about 10:50 a.m. when a loaded Smith and Wesson .40 caliber gun was discovered in his carry-on bag, Port Authority officials said.

Bowers was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and was scheduled to be arraigned in Queens Criminal Court Monday evening, the Queens District Attorney's office said.

A spokesman for the Buccaneers told NBC New York, which first reported the story, that the team was withholding comment while learning the facts of the case.

Bowers had planned to take a US Airways flight to Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina, the Port Authority said.
