WILLOWBROOK — The Staten Island Museum will host a panel of local historians and academics to discuss whether Staten Island had any Underground Railroad activity.

The Feb. 23 discussion will focus on whether the Underground Railroad existed in Staten Island, the Civil War, the Abolitionist movement in New York, oral history and how history is researched, according to a release by the museum.

“The program is designed to bring the community closer to history and make history more accessible to those eager to learn,” the release stated.

The panel will be moderated by Catherine Lavender, director of the American Studies for the College of Staten Island. Panelists include Robert Fanuzzi, a teacher at St. John’s College of Arts and Sciences who’s research focuses on the anti-slavery movement; Calgin Holder, director of African-American Studies at CSI; Howard Wiener and John Dixon, history professors at CSI; and independent scholar Debbie-Ann Paige.

The panel will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the College of Staten Island, Center for the Arts, Recital Hall. Admission is free, and the discussion will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information visit the Staten Island Museum’s website.
