Forest Hills Yoga Studio Offers 'Happy Baby' Pose for Moms and Tots

By Ewa Kern-Jedrychowska | February 15, 2013 2:48pm

QUEENS — It's yoga to go gaga over.

A Forest Hills yoga studio is introducing a 6-week program for new mothers and their newborns, designed to allow moms to relax, to bond with their babies and to meet other mothers.

“We do a little bit of baby massage and then we do movement,” said Suzanne Scholten, the owner of Bamboomoves, who will be teaching the class. “So instead of a typical yoga class where it’s just you doing a movement, we incorporate the babies in the movement.”

Scholten says that will allow moms to become in tune with their babies.

Each class will end with a cup of tea, which will give the new mothers a chance to chat.

“They have some time to connect to one another, to ask questions of each other, and they don’t feel alone,” said Scholten, who pointed out that post-partum depression is a common problem for many mothers. "It’s giving them an outlet where they can come and hang out and have some support.”

Scholten said the class is done in collaboration with a local support group for moms, and is a response to a growing number of young families with babies in the neighborhood.

Young mothers, she said, wanted to be active, but could not attend classes regularly because of their responsibilties to their children.

Interest in the program was so great, Scholten said, that spots in the first group — scheduled to start on Feb. 20 — has already been filled up. Scholten said she had to create another group, which will start on Feb. 26.

Bamboomoves is located at 107-40 Queens Blvd., Ste. 206, Forest Hills. Participation in “Mommy and Me” 6-week program, which includes one class a week, costs $124.
