Kew Gardens Hills Library is Getting Green Expansion

By Ewa Kern-Jedrychowska | February 14, 2013 4:28pm

QUEENS — Kew Gardens Hills Library will soon get bigger and greener.

The branch, which will soon close for construction, is getting more than 3,000 square feet of additional library space.

It will also feature a new entry and an energy-saving green roof.

“It is very heavily used,” said Joanne King, communications director for the Queens Library system, referring to the Kew Gardens Hills branch. “It’s in a very vibrant area and the branch is crowded all the time.”

The expansion aims to ease overcrowding by adding space to the branch’s current 8,400 square feet.

After it reopens in 2015, patrons will be able to use fast RFID-powered self-check-out. There will also be twice as many computers available to the public.

The branch, located at 72-33 Vleigh Place, will close on February 22.

A temporary library will open mid-March at 71-34 Main Street, about two blocks away from the current location. It will serve the local community throughout construction.

Patrons can also use other branches in the area, including Queens Library in Hillcrest at 187-05 Union Turnpike; in Briarwood at 85-12 Main Street; and in Pomonok at 158-21 Jewel Avenue.
