NEW YORK CITY — The city's schools will open their doors to students Friday morning ahead of a blizzard that's forecast to wallop New York.
Public schools plan to operate on a normal schedule, but after-school programs and PSAL games have been canceled, according to the mayor's office and Department of Education.
A blizzard warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday until 1 p.m. Saturday. The storm will start out as light snow and possibly turn to a wintry mix Friday afternoon.
Things will pick up Friday night with winds gusting up to 39 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Total accumulation could reach 14 inches, officials said.
Earlier in the school year, city public schools shut down for five days in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Officials plan to make up for that outage by shortening the midwinter break at the end of this month.
There were also no plans to shut down subways as of Thursday night, but the MTA said they would consider shutting down bus service before the brunt of the storm to keep the fleet from becoming stuck.
