BREEZY POINT — A boil-water order in Breezy Point has been lifted for most of the Sandy-battered neighborhood, the city said.
After a series of pipe flushings and tests, the city departments of Health and Mental Hygiene and Environmental Protection announced Wednesday that it is now safe to drink the tap water in all areas of Breezy Point except the area between Jamaica Walk and Ocean Avenue, to the south of Oceanside Avenue.
Breezy Point’s water distribution system, which is privately managed and operated, was disrupted due to Hurricane Sandy, with damage to pipes and loss of water pressure, the DEP said.
In November, the city ordered Breezy Point residents not to drink the water. In January, the order was updated, allowing residents of the community, which was ravaged by a massive fire in the wake of the storm, to boil drinking water.
The city warned that water from faucets that have not been regularly used may have some discoloration or cloudiness. Residents are advised to run the faucet until the water runs cold and clear, which could take several minutes, according to the DEP.
The DEP also advised all residents to replace ice machine filters and beverage dispenser filters, and to flush water through the filter for five minutes.
A spokeswoman for the health department said that Breezy Point water officials have not provided a timeframe for when all water in the neighborhood will be up to state standards.
