SoomSoom Vegetarian Bar Caters to Upper East Siders Craving Healthy Eats

YORKVILLE — It's a bar with baklava instead of booze.

SoomSoom Vegetarian Bar — a New York-based Mediterranean chain — will soon open a fourth location at 1603 Second Ave., near East 83rd Street, the restaurant's management confirmed.

"We have one on the Upper West Side, and in the past two years, a lot of customers have asked us to open on the Upper East Side," said Shlomi Levi, a SoomSoom manager. "There's a need. There's lot of people who search for vegetarian and kosher food, for something fast and fresh."

SoomSoom offers Middle Eastern favorites such as hummus and falafel platters and sandwiches. It also includes a topping bar with more than 18 accompaniments such as pickles, tabouli, red cabbage and onion salad.

For those seeking sweet treats, SoomSoom sells baklava — comprised of nuts-and-honey-filled filo dough — and mint lemonade.

Prices range from about $6 to $12 for main courses, according to SoomSoom's ordering webpage.

"It's very authentic," Levi said. "We don't sell anything that we don't make ourself — besides Coca-Cola."

The Second Avenue location — slated to open in two months — joins outlets at East 55th Street and Lexington Avenue, West 72nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue and West 46th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

Levi said he's not worried about Second Avenue Subway construction deterring customers. Rather, the company is so confident that business will pick up post-project that the SoomSoom signed a 15-year lease for the soon-to-open eatery, Levi said.

"We're looking forward," he said. "It's a nice location."
