Five Artists To Do Painting Performances Outside of Boerum Hill Gallery

BOERUM HILL — The entranceway to a horror-inspired gallery will soon become the artists’ canvas.

Five pop artists, from all corners of the country, will be painting murals live outside  MF Gallery to celebrate the opening of the gallery’s new show.

The exhibit doesn’t have a title, but the theme centers on influences from 1980s pop culture, including toys, skateboarding, heavy metal, horror movies and cartoon colors, said Martina Secondo Rosso, an owner of the gallery.

“There isn’t really a formal theme, but their styles interweave with each other,” Russo said.

Through April 7, MF Gallery, a quirky art space located at 213 Bond St., will be featuring the works of artists Frank Russo, Twerps!, Scarecrowoven, Lamour Supreme and Death Head.

The artists will attend the opening party on Feb. 16 and paint murals on the walls of the entranceway, which is currently a blank white space that leads up to the gallery on the second floor, Russo said.

“[The murals] will most likely be of characters,” said Russo. “Their subjects are usually monstrous, cartoony characters that are really poppy.”

Russo said she has plans to invite artists in upcoming shows to fill the empty walls of their entranceway as well.

“We have a big wide entranceway and we want to cover that whole space with murals,” Russo said.

All pieces of work will be on view and for sale during the opening party. The show will be available to view by appointment only until April 7.

The opening party is Feb. 16, from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.mfgallery.net.
