Inwood Talent Show to Feature Top Local Artists

By Nigel Chiwaya | January 23, 2013 4:32pm

INWOOD — Uptown residents will be treated to a night of performances by local artists early next month when Darling Coffee and Bread and Yoga host the Om Grown Variety Show.

Much as the name suggests, the 75-minute show on Feb. 2 will feature home-grown talent performing spoken word, sketch, live music and short plays.

According to co-producer Josh Liveright, the purpose of the show is to give artists a chance to test out new material while also showcasing the wealth of talent in Inwood.

"The goal is to get people from all walks of life involved," said Liveright, who produced similar shows around the city in the early 2000s. "There are so many artists up here—in music, theater, opera—that we figured we'd tap into the local talent and give it try.

Liveright, the husband of Bread and Yoga owner Marcela Xavier, will take the stage himself; performing short plays. Other performers include musicians Siobhan O’Malley and Unigen, poets Diane Keeny and Carlo Baldi, and comedians Matt and Tracie Higgins and Victor Verhaeghe.

Depending on the turnout, Liveright said that additional shows could be planned in the future.

"This is the premier of something that we hope will last a while. Each show will be different."

The Om Grown Variety Show will take place on Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Darling Coffee, 4961 Broadway. Suggested donation to the event is $10. For reservations email JLiveright@gmail.com.
