Three Kings Parade Delights Spectators in East Harlem

By Paul Lomax | January 4, 2013 3:50pm

EAST HARLEM — School children and adults alike lined up to watch as live camels, giant puppets, colorful floats and a variety of performers made their way along Third Avenue for the 36th Annual Three Kings Parade.

The parade from East 106th Street to 116th Street is presented each year by El Museo Del Barrio. It's a holiday tradition that celebrates the Epiphany, when the three wise men completed a 12-day journey to find the infant Jesus and give him their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

"I've being doing this since 1988, and I do it because this procession is part of the community that I love,” said Rafael Morales, a member of the Knights of Columbus, who watched the parade on Friday. “And yes, I'll be back again next year, God willing."

Ina Seow, 37, lives on the Upper East Side and said she was “having a blast” watching the procession of animals, floats and performers.

“It's very interesting to see all the different costumes and to see everyone having a lot of fun," Seow said.

City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez also turned out for the parade on Friday morning and said he was “very proud” to be a spectator at the annual event.

"This is very important for our city where people of different ethnic groups can celebrate this cultural procession," Rodriguez said.
