By Nicholas Rizzi | December 31, 2012 4:52pm

NEW YORK CITY — The Department of Sanitation has extended its additional storm debris collections for neighborhoods devastated by Hurricane Sandy for three more weeks.

The Sanitation Department originally planned to end the special debris collections on Monday, Dec. 31, but has extended the end date until January 14, 2013, according to a press release.

The Sanitation Department has provided extra pickups of storm debris in Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn Since Sandy struck, tacking on an extra day of pickup service the day before regularly scheduled pickups, Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said in a release.

“The men and women of the Department have been working around the clock since Super Storm Sandy hit in order to clear roads of sand and debris and remove massive amounts of flooded furniture, clothing and personal items left behind in its wake,” Doherty said in the release.

“We now are in the midst of the winter snow season and our full resources must be ready to tackle snowstorms of any size and frequency,” Doherty said, adding that the department needed all its resources starting mid-January to prepare themselves for winter snowstorms.

The Sanitation Department has already picked up over 381,000 tons on debris from homeowners who were impacted by the storm.

The Sanitation Department has been collecting non-commercial waste from homeowners who preformed small repairs on their home after the storm. Large demolition and reconstruction projects are the responsibilty of the construction companies, who hav to hire a removal company and a dumpster, DSNY said in a release said.
