FLATLANDS — A 76-year-old woman crossing Avenue M on her way to church was struck and killed by a car Sunday evening, according to the NYPD and the victim's neighbors.

Nicoletta Gargano was crossing at East 57th Street on her way to a dinner at Mary Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church, a block away from her home, when at 6:42 p.m. a 1990 Ford turned south on Avenue M and hit her, authorities and neighbors said.

Emergency responders found Gargano unconscious and took her to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where she died, officials said.

Police don't suspect any criminality in the accident.

Neighbors described Gargano as being "very pleasant" and a "lovely person."

Danielle Napolitano, who lives across the street from Gargano's home on East 57th Street, and other neighbors said Gargano was a very active member of her church.

Napolitano said she often saw the victim driving her car, a silver Buick, around the block. She said Gargano lived with her son and that her husband died several years ago.

She was " a really sweet, nice old woman," Napolitano added.
