FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A good Samaritan rescued a 55-year-old man who fell onto the R train tracks in Lower Manhattan Friday afternoon, officials said.

The man fell from the platform at the Whitehall Street R station, at Whitehall and Water streets, about 4:10 p.m. and suffered a serious leg injury, the FDNY said.

"Someone went in after them to help them back up," said Kevin Ortiz, MTA spokesman, who did not have additional information about the rescuer.

The victim was taken to New York Downtown Hospital in serious condition, fire officials said.

R train service to Whitehall Street was suspended briefly after the incident but resumed later in the afternoon.
