Park Slope School Rezoning Up for Vote on Wednesday

By Leslie Albrecht | November 28, 2012 9:13am

PARK SLOPE — Local education officials will vote Wednesday night on whether to rezone Park Slope's popular P.S. 321 and other neighborhood schools.

The District 15 Community Education Council, a volunteer panel of parents, is scheduled to vote on the controversial rezoning proposal at 6 p.m. at P.S. 295 at 330 18th Street and Sixth Avenue.

The meeting was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but CEC president Jim Devor said Tuesday on Twitter the start time had been shifted to 6 p.m. No public comment will be taken before the CEC's vote, Devor said on Twitter.

The CEC's approval is required before the Department of Education can move forward with the rezoning plan, which was first unveiled in October. The new zoning would go into effect in the 2013 school year.

The plan would shrink the zone for the highly-regarded but increasingly crowded P.S. 321 and P.S. 107, and expand the zone for P.S. 10. A new K-5 school would be created in the St. Thomas Aquinas building on Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street.

Some parents have fought the rezoning, arguing that it would lessen diversity at P.S. 321 and force many families to attend a new, untested school at the Aquinas building.
