Man Arrested on Charges of Shooting 5-Year-Old Girl

TREMONT — A Bronx man was arrested for firing a shot that wounded a 5-year-old girl who was returning from a bridal shower early Sunday, police said.

Angel Morales was charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon, police said Monday.

The victim, who along with her family was returning from a bridal shower nearby, was in the courtyard of 1997 Hughes Ave. when gunfire erupted.

That's when the girl was struck in the stomach by a stray bullet, police said.

When police responded to the scene, officers rushed the girl to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was stabilized. She was subsequently taken to Columbia Presbyterian, where police said she was in stable condition.

Investigators later determined that Morales, who has a prior arrest for misdemeanor marijuana possession, fired the shot that wounded the girl, police said.

The girl, whose identity has not been released, was not the intended target.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
