Snow to Hit City Tuesday

By Jesse Lent | November 26, 2012 2:02pm

NEW YORK — A dusting of snow could make for a messy commute Tuesday morning, forecasters say.

Drivers were urged to use caution in their morning drive Tuesday as slushy snow was expected to coat New York between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., shifting to rain or a rain and snow mixture by 11 a.m., officials from the National Weather Service said.

"The slightest bit of precipitation that falls before 6 or 7 a.m. could make the roads slippery, even if temperatures are above freezing," National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Morrin said. "I would take that into consideration."

Less than a quarter-inch of snow is expected to hit the city, with no more than an inch to two inches of snow in the surrounding areas, Morrin said.

"It may not even get to a point where they need to shovel," Morrin said.

The wet weather is spurred by a wave of low pressure moving up from the Tennessee Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and mixing with cold air from Canada, Morrin said.

Yet Morrin believes the conditions do not exist to create a major snowstorm.

“The storm doesn’t have a lot of moisture with it that would cause a lot of precipitation,” he said, adding, “It’s not going to be quite cold enough to make it purely a snow storm.”
