Momofuku to Hold Benefit for Restaurant Shuttered by Hurricane Sandy

DUMBO — Chefs from popular Asian fusion chain Momofuku Ko are pitching in to help a Brooklyn restaurant trashed by Hurricane Sandy.

Momofuku empire owner David Chang's bar Booker and Dax, located at 207 Second Ave. in the East Village, is hosting a fundraising lunch for Governor, an American-style restaurant located at 15 Main St. in DUMBO, which was shuttered by the storm.

"Our friends at Governor in DUMBO were hurt hard by Hurricane Sandy," reads the invitation to the Nov. 17 lunch. "Momofuku Chefs join forces with the governor team to help raise funds and the spirits of the 30+ employees affected by the disaster."

There were only 13 tickets left by Tuesday night to the $325-per head lunch, which lasts from noon to 3 p.m.

It features a six-course meal by Momofuku Ko chefs Sean Gray and Matt Rudofker as well as Governor chef Brad McDonald, formerly of Per Se. The meal will include canapés, shaved foie gras, leg of lamb, beef tartare and celery root pasta.

McDonald said Governor restaurant — which only opened in July — is "actively seeking ways to slot [employees] into other restaurants temporarily.” He added that proceeds from the fundraiser would go to help staff.

During the storm, when 4-foot surges of floodwater hit the waterfront in DUMBO, the restaurant’s flooring, equipment, and food and drink inventory were wiped out. The restaurant will be closed for the foreseeable future, McDonald said.

“We are currently getting ourselves organized to rebuild,” he said. “Most everything on the ground floor was leveled, including the range and all the coolers, in addition to the entire bar area."

McDonald added that other restaurants have stood by their side.

“The industry by and large has been incredibly supportive,” he said.

Space is limited to 30 seats, and the event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Nov. 17. To purchase a ticket, visit momofukugovernorbenefit.eventbrite.com. To make a direct donation to Governor, visit www.gofundme.com/1g1e4k.
