Commuters Forced to Walk Through Lincoln Tunnel After Bus Crash

NEW YORK CITY — Two buses collided in the Lincoln Tunnel during the Monday morning rush hour, leaving nearly two dozen people injured, and creating major rush hour delays that forced some frustrated commuters to walk through the tube to get to work, officials and riders said.

A Martz Trailways bus rear-ended a New Jersey Transit bus about 7 a.m. as the vehicles were approaching the inbound tunnel in a bus-only lane, officials from New Jersey Transit and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

The collision injured approximately 20 people, two of them seriously, a Port Authority spokesman said.

The Martz driver was hurt, as were five passengers and the bus driver of the New Jersey Transit bus, all of whom were taken to nearby hospitals.

Some commuters were trapped in the tunnel for at least two hours and eventually disembarked and walked the rest of the way, frustrated commuters tweeted.

"Lincoln tunnel jam caused buses to evacuate people!" Twitter user @Nkole wrote.
