By  Murray Weiss and Aidan Gardiner | November 11, 2012 5:11pm | Updated on November 11, 2012 5:14pm

NEW YORK — Hurricane Sandy's death toll climbed to 43 on Sunday, claiming additional victims from the Rockaways and Staten Island, police said.

The New York Police Department confirmed that a 64-year-old Midland Beach man, found dead in his home Friday afternoon, was the 42nd death caused by the storm, which has left up to 40,000 homeless.

He was discovered around 2:30 p.m., after a neighbor flagged down police and asked that they check on the home.

Police had not released his name, pending family notification.

Albert McSwain, a retired NYPD Academy custodian, was the 43rd victim to die from storm-related causes, police said Sunday.

On Oct. 31, at 3:15 p.m., relatives of the 77-year-old McSwain discovered him on the bottom steps of his dark, powerless apartment building on 84-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

McSwain suffered head and body trauma, and was paralyzed from the neck down.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, but eventually succumbed to his injuries on Nov. 10, police said.

McSwain worked at the Academy from 1968 to 1991.
