WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Twenty students were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon after coming into contact with an unknown substance at a Washington Heights middle school, officials said.

Emergency workers responded to I.S. 143 Eleanor Roosevelt, 515 W. 182nd St., about 12:45 p.m. after students complained of throat irritation, the FDNY said.

Twenty children were taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries, the FDNY said.

The Department of Education did not immediately comment.
