Slugger Delmon Young Pleads Guilty to Anti-Semitic Attack at Midtown Hotel

By Irene Plagianos | November 7, 2012 2:05pm

MANHATTAN CRIMINAL COURT — Detroit Tigers star Delmon Young pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated harassment for spewing ant-Semitic slurs before tackling a man to the ground outside a Midtown Hotel in a drunken tirade earlier this year.

The embattled slugger was sentenced to 10 days community service and must also enroll in a one-day restorative justice program that’s run by New York’s Museum of Tolerance under the deal.

As part of the 27-year-old outfielder's plea deal, if he completes his service and stays out of legal trouble for the next six months, his charge will be reduced to second-degree harassment.

If the current free agent violates his sentence, he faces up to a year in jail on the aggravated harassment charge.

Prosecutors said Young was walking into the Hilton Hotel on Sixth Avenue at West 54th Street in April when he spotted a man wearing a yarmulke and Star of David necklace who wanted money.

Young allegedly shouted "You bunch of f---ing Jews!" before sparking a scuffle in which he tackled hotel guest Jason Shank, a 32-year-old tourist, who is also Jewish.

Young declined to comment as he left Manhattan Criminal Court.
