Where to Find Heat, Food and Shelter After Sandy

NEW YORK CITY — After the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, coupled with the double-whammy of Wednesday's Nor'Easter, many New Yorkers who remain without shelter, food and water, are now coping with frigid temperatures and more power downed power lines.

For those without food, blankets, water and other supplies, the city has set up distribution points at the following locations, open from noon to 4 p.m.:

Queens:

  • Redfern Houses Community Center, at Hassock Street and Beach Channel
  • Hammel Community Center, Beach 84th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard
  • Beach 41st Street Community Center, Beach Channel Drive and Beach 40th Street
  • St. Francis De Sales Parish, 129-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard at Beach 129th Street

Brooklyn:

  • Shorefront YMHA, Coney Island Avenue and Brightwater Court
  • Our Lady of Solace Church, Mermaid Avenue and 19th Street
  • Calvary Baptist Church, Hicks Street between Mill Street and West 9th Street

Staten Island:

  • Miller Field, corner of Mill Road and New Dorp Lane
  • Midland Beach, corner of Father Capodano Boulevard and Hunter Avenue

The shelters will be kept open for as long as needed and no one looking for food and water will be turned away, city officials say.  Each person is entitled to three meals and five bottles of water. Those looking for supplies should bring their own bags.

Although the city closed dozens of temporary shelters on Thursday ahead of public schools reopening on Monday, there are still 11 temporary shelters available across the city for those in need.

Queens:

  • Hillcrest High School, at 160-05 Highland Ave., Jamaica
  • Queens College, at 65-30 Kissena Blvd., Flushing
  • York College, at 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd., Jamaica  (for people with special medical needs only)

Brooklyn:

  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School, 5800 20th Ave.
  • The Park Slope Armory, at 361 15th St. (for people with special medical needs only)
  • Brooklyn Tech High School, at 29 Fort Greene Place (for people with special medical needs only)

Manhattan:

  • George Washington High School, at 549 Audubon Ave.
  • John Jay College, at 445 W. 59th St. (for people with special medical needs only)

Staten Island:

  • Susan Wagner High School, at 1200 Manor Rd.
  • Tottenville High School, at 100 Luten Ave.

The Bronx:

  • Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Blvd. W.

Buses continue to run between shelters and areas worst-hit by Sandy:

Here are the pickup locations and the shelters that the buses will take you:

Queens:

  • For transportation to Hillcrest High School at 160-05 Highland Avenue between Parsons Boulevard and 162nd Street, and to other shelter sites, bus pickup starts at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 144th Street and at the Waldbaums parking lot at Beach Channel Drive and 112th StreetThere will also be warming buses available at: Beach

  • 112th Street; Davenport Court near 104th Street at the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department; 100-05 159th Avenue at Our Lady of Grace between 100th and 101st Streets; 112-15 Beach Channel Drive between Beach 130th and Beach 131st; Fort Tilden Park near Breezy Point

Brooklyn:

  • For transportation to FDR High School at 5800 20th Avenue between 57th and 58th Streets, bus pickup starts at Our Lady of Solace at 2865 W 17th Street at Mermaid Avenue.
  • There will also be warming buses available at the Our Lady of Solace parking lot at 2865 W 17th Street at Mermaid Avenue

Staten Island:

  • For transportation to Tottenville High School at 100 Luten Avenue between Deisius and Billiou Streets, one bus pickup starts at Hylan Boulevard at Richmond Avenue. A second bus starts pickups at Mill Road and New Dorp Lane, making pickups along Mill Road all the way to Guyon Avenue.
  • For transportation to Susan Wagner High School at 1200 Manor Road and Brielle avenue, bus pickup starts at Hylan Boulevard and New Dorp Lane and makes stops along Hylan Boulevard all the way to Steuben Street.
  • There will also be warming buses available at Miller Field, adjacent to New Dorp High School and Father Capodanno Boulevard and Hunter Avenue.

In preparation for the cold weather, the city has opened dozens of daytime warming centers in most boroughs., most of which are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

And if you need help applying for emergency social and economic assistance, the city has set up two sites, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.:

Brooklyn: Our Lady of Solace 2865 at West 17th Street, at Mermaid Avenue

Staten Island: Mount Loretto at 6581 Hylan Blvd. at Sharrotts Road

Those who choose to remain at home are advised to wear loose layers, gloves and hats, drink warm liquids, and avoid using a gas stove or portable gas heater inside to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Also watch out for signs of hypothermia, including confusion or sleepiness, slowed or slurred speech, uncontrollable shivering and poor control over body movements.

For those experiencing anxiety and depression due to the effects of Sandy, the Mental Health Association of New York City is urging New Yorkers to call their crisis hotline, 800-LIFENET, for assistance.

There are also a number of non-city sites offering food and shelter:

The Faith Exchange Community is offering clothes, shoes, food, paper products, diapers and other supplies at the Superstorm Sandy Relief Center at 95 Leonard St. in TriBeCa.

The center is open for dropoff and pickup Mon.-Fri. 12-3pm, Wed. 5:30-9pm, Sun. 10am-1pm. For more info, check out their Facebook page.
